The College Farm has added five sheep to Murphy’s pasture in front of the farm shop.
These lambs are a Dorper cross, a breed developed in South Africa. They are a hair sheep, meaning the wool is non-existent or poor, depending how much Dorset blood is in the mix with the Dorper. They were bred by our friends at the Biltmore Estate–just downstream and the largest farm in Buncombe County. The Dorper breed were selected for quality meat, and that is why we have added them, to complement our natural meats program. More importantly, this will be a new experience for Farm Crew to learn about sheep husbandry. If things go well, and we are able to keep the coyotes at bay, we may expand the program to include a breeding flock in the next few years.
