APRIL FOOLS! Warren Wilson Unveils Groundbreaking New Major: Applied Barefoot Studies

Warren Wilson College, a pioneer in innovative and experiential education, is thrilled to announce the introduction of its latest major: Applied Barefoot Studies. This revolutionary program is designed to immerse students in the art, science, and cultural significance of walking barefoot.

In a world where the rhythm of life often demands footwear, Warren Wilson College is breaking new ground by recognizing the importance of the humble bare foot. The Applied Barefoot Studies major will provide students with a unique interdisciplinary approach, blending elements of biology, anthropology, podiatry and environmental studies.

“We are excited to offer students the opportunity to explore the profound connection between human beings and the earth beneath their feet,” said Dr. Emily Sanders, Dean of the School of Applied Barefoot Studies. “This major isn’t just about walking barefoot – it’s about understanding the physiological, psychological, and ecological implications of this simple act.”

The curriculum will feature a diverse range of courses, including:

  • Barefoot Biomechanics: Delve into the mechanics of the foot and its interaction with different surfaces.
  • Cultural Perspectives on Barefooting: Explore the historical and cultural significance of walking barefoot around the world.
  • Ecological Footprints: Investigate the environmental impact of footwear and the benefits of barefoot living.
  • The Art of Barefoot Meditation: Learn mindfulness practices centered around the act of walking barefoot.

Students pursuing a degree in Applied Barefoot Studies will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including a barefoot walking trail, foot anatomy lab, and sensory perception garden.

“We believe that embracing barefoot living is not only beneficial for the individual but also for the planet,” said Dr. Sanders. “By understanding the symbiotic relationship between humans and the earth, our students will be equipped to make meaningful contributions to a more sustainable future.”

Enrollment for the Applied Barefoot Studies major will open in the fall semester of 2024, and prospective students are encouraged to kick off their shoes and take the first step towards a transformative educational experience.

And yes, this is an April Fools joke.
