My Story

Academic year 2016-2017 marks my fortieth year of college teaching and my thirty-first year of teaching at Warren Wilson College. The work remains as absorbing, as nurturing, and as challenging as it was that day in September 1977 when I first walked into my own classroom at the University of Rochester, accidentally kicking a misplaced metal trash can across the front of the room with a great, impressive, clattering racket. I have always known how to make an entrance. The work of teaching still remains as absorbing, as nurturing, and as challenging as when I first began: I still learn new insights, perspectives, and knowledge from my students as well as from my own reading and thinking; I still find confirmation that my work makes a difference in the lives and work of my students and alumni; and I still feel far from having perfected this mystery that is the encounter of human minds and human imaginations in the pursuit of knowledge, skill, or wisdom.
