With the Nov. 3 election of Gordon Smith, Warren Wilson College now has two young alumni on the six-member Asheville City Council.
Smith, a 1994 Warren Wilson graduate, joins fellow alumnus Brownie Newman on the council. Newman, now in his second term, was first elected to the council in 2003 and now has been unanimously chosen by his fellow council members to serve as vice mayor.
Smith is a licensed child and family therapist who grew up in central Florida. Newman, originally from upstate South Carolina, is director of outreach and education for the Conservation Council of North Carolina. They reflect the significant impact that alumni of relatively small Warren Wilson College – located just outside the Asheville city limits – continue to have on the largest city in western North Carolina.
