“Over the past weeks, in the wake of the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, many young people have been inspired and motivated to engage in peaceful protests against gun violence and debate about gun control laws. We realize that some high schools have indicated that students may face disciplinary action for their participation.

Warren Wilson College is, and always has been, a community that supports civic action and that understands the role of protest in making meaningful change, and the role of free speech and debate as a fundamental American right. This support is reflected in our mission and lived in our day-to-day practices, including in our admissions office. Therefore let me be perfectly clear: no students engaging in their right to peaceful protest or healthy debate would see their admissions status jeopardized as a result of their civic engagement.”
