Embracing Neurocomplexity

Warren Wilson College Expands Support for All Learners

Warren Wilson College has long been committed to providing an inclusive, student-centered education, and we are proud to announce the expansion of our support services to better serve all learners. Our unique approach—grounded in experiential learning, small class sizes, and a deeply supportive community—ensures that students of all learning styles can thrive academically, socially, and professionally. No matter how you learn, you belong here.

A Learning Model Designed for All

Warren Wilson has always embraced neurocomplexity, understanding that each student learns in their own way. Within the college context, Neurocomplexity is a way to understand, embrace, and support the unique way that each individual student’s mind works and how that manifests in their health, academic success, and sense of belonging. As part of our new initiative, we have been providing extensive training for all faculty and work crew supervisors to better support neurocomplex learners, utilizing Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL is a teaching approach that eliminates unnecessary barriers and creates flexible learning environments where students can engage in a variety of ways and demonstrate their knowledge through multiple methods. Our integrated academic model—built on academics, work, and community engagement—allows students to apply their learning in real-world settings, making education more accessible and meaningful.

“Warren Wilson’s approach to learning is not just about accommodating difference– it’s about acknowledging and celebrating the ways our differences contribute to powerful opportunities and outcomes. Our hands-on, experiential approach to learning meets students where they are and challenges them to excel in a supportive and challenging environment. It is this powerful combination of high expectation, high support that develops the critical skills necessary for life and career success,” says Provost Dr. Jay Roberts.

Expanded Support Services

To further enhance our commitment to student success, we are expanding our comprehensive support services. Every student at Warren Wilson has access to universal services like academic support, mental health counseling, peer tutoring, and career preparation—all designed to help them navigate college and beyond. Our collaborative, interdepartmental approach ensures that students receive holistic support both inside and outside the classroom.

In addition to these universal services, we now offer structured, fee-based programs for students seeking additional support. These programs include a pre-orientation experience to help first-year students transition smoothly into college, a weekly coaching program called The College Compass that supports students to thrive in all aspects of college life, and an intensive learning support program called The Learning Curve  that provides one-on-one daily assistance with executive functioning and academic strategies. These programs are designed to provide additional layers of structure and guidance for students who want extra support in managing their academic and personal growth.

Preparing Students for Life Beyond College

At Warren Wilson, education extends beyond the classroom. Every student completes an internship or field experience, gaining valuable hands-on learning that translates directly to career success. Our Work Program further reinforces these skills, helping students develop problem-solving abilities, leadership, and adaptability—key traits for any professional path. Beginning their first year, every student will work for a minimum of 10 hours per week on a college work crew under the mentorship of a professional staff supervisor. That mentor will provide consistent supervision and support, and at the end of each semester they will give a formal evaluation that includes positive encouragement, constructive feedback, and specific goal setting.

“This commitment to an individualized, hands-on education is part of our Progressive Promise for All: to provide a transformative learning experience that meets students where they are and provides the experiences that will empower them for the future,” says President Damián Fernández. “Everyone should have the opportunity to experience the high impact of a Warren Wilson education.”

A College for All Students

At Warren Wilson College, we believe that education should be accessible, inclusive, and empowering for every student. Our expanded support services reaffirm our mission to provide a dynamic, hands-on education that fosters personal and professional growth. In addition, we are hosting a Counselor and Independent Education Consultant (IEC) Fly-In Program this April to better acquaint professionals who specialize in serving neurocomplex learners with our programs. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to broaden access and ensure that students receive the guidance they need to find the right college fit.

Whether students are looking for universal support or more structured assistance, Warren Wilson is committed to helping all learners succeed.
