Warren Wilson Celebrates Black History Month

As the nation commemorates Black History Month, Warren Wilson College proudly announces a series of events throughout February to create awareness about the Black experience, and to celebrate and honor the rich contributions of Black individuals to our shared history and culture.

The celebrations begin on Wednesday, February 7 at 6 p.m. with a lecture series featuring Dr. Dwight Mullen, Chair of the Asheville and Buncombe County Community Reparations Commission and Professor Emeritus of Political Science at UNC Asheville. His topic will be “The State of Black Asheville: A Review.” The lecture is free and open to the public. See more details.

On Friday, February 16 the college will host a concert by Dr. Sam Waymon, an award-winning film composer, songwriter, performer, singer, pianist, and brother of the late Nina Simone. Sam co-wrote many of Nina’s popular songs; and toured with her band for her first 25 years as her manager, confidante, and organist. He has shared the concert stage with such greats as Miles Davis, Odetta, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Quincy Jones, Donny Hathaway, Phyllis Hyman, Max Roach and many more, along with his sister Nina. The WWC Advanced Jazz Ensemble will open the concert at 6:30 in the Kittredge Lobby. Tickets are $40 for the public. Get tickets.
