Warren Wilson's Archaeology Field School focuses on the Berry site, the 16th century Native American town of Joara where a Spanish fort was built, located in present-day Morganton, North Carolina.
Before Jamestown and before the Lost Colony at Roanoke, there was a Spanish fort just outside Morganton called Fort San Juan. What happened there changed the course of history.
Dr. David Moore, an archaeology professor at Warren Wilson, discovered the fort in 1986, along with the Native American village Joara. Our students have an incredible opportunity to work on the excavation in the summer, sort this material during the year and learn how to analyze the different materials. The site is only an hour from Warren Wilson College.
