Family in Swannanoa Loses Home in Fire

by Tim Burkardt, staff writer

On Tuesday morning, April 10, a Swannanoa family lost their home and many of their possessions in a fire. Christine Swoap, Professor of Modern Languages, has taken it upon herself to assist the family in their time of need, and also to spread the word around the community and raise support for the family in their time of trouble.

“I’ve got twins in school, a boy and a girl, and one of their classmates lost their house in the fire,” said Swoap. “The adults’ clothes were ruined… I got a list of the sizes and took that list down to the free store, so they are looking for things.”

Swoap went on to say that if any students were cleaning out their wardrobes to prepare for the summer school exodus, they should consider donating their items to the family. What is needed most are women’s size 20 pants, men’s size 42/30 pants, and 4X Shirts. Furniture, appliances, and toys would also be gladly accepted.

Clothing and other donations are being accepted at the Riceville Fire Department at 2251 Riceville Road.

Monetary donations can be made at any Wells Fargo for Cory Short, Emma Lee Chapman, and Kristin Bower.
