Warren Wilson Student to Cycle from Rhode Island to California to Raise Awareness for Affordable Housing

This summer, Warren Wilson student Chris DeFiore will be co-leading a cross-country cycling trip with Bike & Build, a national non-profit organization. Chris and 30 others will travel over 4000 miles from Providence, RI to Half Moon Bay, CA. They will stop along the way in nine locations including Lawrence, KS, Moab, UT, and Stockton, CA to build with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, and Community Rebuilds (anon-profit focused on energy-efficient housing)

“Every person deserves a safe and decent place to live and it is a necessity [in order] for kids to be able to focus on their education,” Chris said. “Our journey will not only directly support the Affordable Housing organizations, it will also serve as a means for the communities and riders to share their stories and discuss housing issues with each other. I believe there is nothing that brings communities and people together like service. I am excited to meet all of the amazing individuals who are dedicating their summer to the cause and all of the incredible people we will meet along the way.”

Before embarking on their journey, each rider must raise $4500 to help fund the trip and Affordable Housing organizations nationwide.

How can you help?

Chris will be accepting donations the week of April-9th-April13th outside of Gladfelter. At this time you can also sign up for a campus-widegame of assassins in which the entry fees will go towards affordable housing. There will be super-sweet prizes for the winners.

You can also make a donation by visiting www.bikeandbuild.org.All donations are free of credit card charges; all contributions go directly to Bike & Build. To find out more just ask Chris DeFiore or email him at cdefiore.s12@warren-wilson.edu.

Based in Philadelphia, Bike & Build is a non-profit organization that encourages young adults to address the country’s affordable housing crisis through organizing bicycle trips. Trip participants support the affordable housing cause by fundraising and building efforts. Since 2003 Bike & Build has motivated over 1600 young adult volunteers and contributed over $3.4 million and 1000,000 volunteer hours to housing groups such as Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together to fund projects in the United States.
