Futurebirds’ Holiday Road Tour hits the Grey Eagle in Asheville

by Mariah Parker, Multimedia Editor

I went to shows all the time as a first-year, but these days, I lack the spunk for frenzied dancing and the like. That’s why I love shows like Futurebird’s Dec. 7 performance at the Grey Eagle; with their emotionally-charged mix of dreamy alt-country, Futurebirds left me feeling both mellow and uplifted.

Futurebirds’ style marries the viscerality of Lynyrd Skynyrd with dreaminess of My Morning Jacket, creating a sound that is both down-home and out of this world. Their recently released Holiday Road Tour super single–produced with tour mates Grass Giraffes–is a textured recipe of jangly guitar licks, crooning vocals, ethereal echo, and hypnotizing slide guitar.

Before kicking off their Holiday Road Tour, the Athens, Georgia, sextet played with national acts like Widespread Panic, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and Drive-By Truckers. Their newest EP, Hampton’s Lullaby, is sure to “chicken-tetrazzinify your frontal lobe.”
