College receives acollade from Sierra Club

For the fourth year in a row, Warren Wilson College is one of Sierra Magazine’s top 20 “Cool Schools” – colleges and universities recognized for their efforts to stop global warming and operate sustainably.

Warren Wilson, ranked No. 14 this year, has appeared on the annual list ever since Sierra launched it in 2007.

“It is an honor to receive Sierra’s ‘Cool Schools’ distinction, for it recognizes the collective action of our entire campus community,” Warren Wilson College President Sandy Pfeiffer said.

“Warren Wilson attracts students who want to change the world. We immerse them in our Triad of academics, work and service in which they tackle global issues on a local scale and work toward a resilient, sustainable community every day.”

The “Coolest Schools” are featured in the cover story of Sierra’s September/October issue. The article notes that “Warren Wilson gets more than a third of its food from farms within 500 miles of campus – including from its own six-acre organic garden.”

“With all of the environmental challenges we face, it’s heartening to see the leadership of schools like Warren Wilson when it comes to protecting the planet,” said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, which publishes Sierra Magazine. “This generation of students cares deeply about protecting the environment, stopping global warming and increasing our prosperity through innovation.”

According to the magazine, “This year’s top-20 Coolest Schools are taking dramatic steps to curb climate change. From small, environmentally focused liberal arts colleges to the largest research universities, schools across the country are helping to move the country towards a more sustainable future.”

In addition to many other green accolades, Warren Wilson was recently named to the Princeton Review’s 2011 Green Rating Honor Roll, comprised of 18 schools, and to U.S. News & World Report’s list of “10 Eco-Friendly College Campuses.”
