Warren Wilson wins 2014 collegiate paddling national championships

Students from Warren Wilson College, Hollins University, Albion College, University of Virginia, Western Carolina University, Southwestern Community College and the University of Alabama met on the Tuckasegee River in Dillsboro, N.C., March 29-30 to compete in the annual ACA Collegiate Race Series National Championships.

Over 50 students, faculty and coaches from these schools showed up for the canoe and kayak whitewater races which took place on the section of the river called the Tuck Gorge. This section includes several major rapids: Railroad (class II), Prudential Rock (II+) and Double Drop (II+).  Students took on all 3 rapids and put up some outstanding times on the race course.

Students returned to Cedar Cliff Lake on Sunday for the BIC SUP One Design Collegiate Nationals which consisted of flatwater stand up paddleboard races.

Overall Team Winners

Men’s Championship

  • 1st Place: Warren Wilson College
  • 2nd Place: University of Alabama
  • 3rd Place: Albion College

Women’s Championship

  • 1st Place: Warren Wilson College
  • 2nd Place: Albion College
  • 3rd Place: Hollins University
