WWC basketball teams play in USCAA nationals

Warren Wilson College’s basketball teams have received bids to the 2014 USCAA Basketball National Championships in Uniontown, Pa. The women received a No. 8 seed and the men a No. 5.

Here’s 2014 USCAA national tournament information.

The men’s basketball team, 2013 USCAA DII national champions, fell to No. 4 seed Penn State – Mont Alto 71-60 in the quarterfinals March 6. Ty Johnson scored 22 and Rashad Ali 14 to lead Owl scoring; Thomas Hay added 8 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Complete game statistics can be found here.

The Owls lost a consolation game the next day to top-seeded Central Maine, 90-85, despite 22 points and 7 assists by Justin Gonyea. WWC finished the year with a 16-13 record,  the Owls’ third straight winning season.

The WWC women’s  team, which finished the regular season with a 16-10 record, lost to No. 1 seed Central Maine Community College 79-58 March 6 in the quarterfinals despite 20 points and 11 rebounds by Lilvia Bradbury. The Owl women fell to Penn State – Beaver 69-44 in their consolation game to finish the season 16-12. Dani Henderson scored 15 points and Lilvia Bradbury grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Owls.

Congratulations to both squads on fine seasons that resulted in national tournament bids.
