Warren Wilson’s top 10 ranked men’s basketball team defeated North Greenville University, a Division II NCAA team, 76-60, Feb. 18 on Senior Night.
The win gave the Owls a final regular-season record of 16-11, their third consecutive winning season.
Last week’s big snow and the Winter Olympics inspired the WWC Athletics Department to ask fans to show their pride with a “Whiteout” in DeVries Gym. After a close first half, the Owls stormed past the Crusaders in the second half as senior Rashad Ali totaled 25 points and sophomore Justin Gonyea added 20. At halftime we honored our two graduating seniors, Rashad Ali and Timur Oktay, in their final home game. Both players were instrumental in the Owls’ 2013 USCAA DII national title run.
The convincing win over North Greenville was critical for our defending national champions as they seek a berth in the 2014 nationals March 4-8 in Uniontown, Pa.
“We are not guaranteed a spot at the championship, but the odds look good,” said Rob Shook, WWC women’s basketball coach and athletics crew supervisor Rob Shook. His women’s team, which finished the regular season 16-10, also is hoping for a spot in the national championships.
Good luck to our fierce, fighting Owls as they move forward defending their title as USCAA DII National Champions!
