Basketball Senior Day at Warren Wilson College qualifies as the best of days and worst of days. On the down side, it’s time to say goodbye to players who have had a significant impact during their Warren Wilson careers. But the up side is that it’s a great time to celebrate the accomplishments of senior hoopsters. And the celebration is always a bit sweeter when the Owls notch a win.
So it was Feb. 8 as point guard Suzie Ashford and forward/guard Dani Henderson played their final game in DeVries Gymnasium. Not surprisingly, both players were instrumental in the Owls’ 64-55 win over feisty Welch College, improving their season record to 16-8.
(Senior guard Sara Blandin finished her Warren Wilson career in December as she completed her bachelor’s degree fall semester.)
Henderson scored 12 points and wasn’t far from a “triple double,” handing out eight assists and grabbing seven rebounds. Ashford added 11 points as she and Henderson joined sophomore center Lilvia Bradbury, who poured in 25, in double-figure scoring.
But the seniors’ WWC playing careers may be far from over. In addition to two more road games to close out the regular season, Ashford and Henderson hope they and their teammates gain a berth in the Division II National Championships of the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association in Uniontown, Pa., March 5-8. Based on the latest coaches’ poll, the Owls seem well positioned to do just that.
