College sponsors Hack for Food event

GIS professor David Abernathy, Advanatge West Grant Director Noah Wilson ’10 and city council member Gordon Smith ’94 were part of the Hack for Food event, which the College sponsored. The hackathon was a friendly contest to create phone apps that would break down access barriers to food and support the Asheville-Buncombe Food Policy Council’s action plan, recently adopted by Asheville City Council. Auto Shop Crew cranks it up with electric truck

Warren Wilson’s Auto Shop Crew has turned a hulking piece of junk into an electric vehicle that can serve the college for years to come. Using grant money from the N.C. Clean Air Coalition and working under the direction of Jonathan Unger, crew supervisor this past year, the 12-student crew converted a 1.25-ton diesel truck into a zero-emission, electric short-haul carrier that the Carpentry Crew will use to transport lumber and other heavy material and equipment.

Caleb Hawkins ’15 places sixth in Timbersports Collegiate National Championship

After winning the Regional Stihl Mid-Atlantic Qualifier Timbersports collegiate competition in April, Caleb Hawkins ’15 of Sedgwick, Maine, advanced to the U.S. Championships June 7-9 in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and won sixth place.

Bright spirits despite rain at 2013 commencement

On May 18, the 2013 Commencement had to be moved to DeVries Gymnasium because of a persistent morning rain (the first time in more than two decades). Of course, there’s at least a slight upside to nearly every shift in plans. The Commencement location had been moved from lovely Sunderland Lawn to the hardwood home of the 2013 men’s basketball national champions. As always, the stars of the show were the nearly 200 bachelor’s degree recipients who had earned B.A. and B.S. degrees — the College’s 45th class as a four-year school.

Fiske Guide to Colleges 2014 names Warren Wilson among 20 Best Buys

For the eighth time since 2005, the Fiske Guide to Colleges has chosen Warren Wilson College as one of the nation’s 20 “Best Buys.” The guide notes, “Success at Warren Wilson is measured not only by grades, but by community service and a sense of stewardship… Roots in the culture of Appalachia combine with a strong international and environmental orientation to give Warren Wilson its unique flavor.”
