Warren Wilson is teaching its students about the future by holding on to a bit of its past. Students like Nick Shaw are renovating the college’s 80-year-old log cabin, which now houses the Work Program that matches students’ interests with work that needs doing on campus. As one leg of the college’s learning Triad, work is as important to the college as are students’ academic experiences and their service to the community.

For the seventh time since 2005, the Fiske Guide to Colleges has chosen Warren Wilson College as one of the nation’s 20 “Best Buys” among private colleges and universities.

Emily Chiara, who is studying food production in India as part of her global studies degree, volunteers at The Lord’s Acre to produce food for a local food bank. She thinks that service brings the other two legs of Warren Wilson’s triad – academics and work – together. “I never wanted to be a student who stayed on campus, focused on herself for four years, and then left,” Chiara said. “Service teaches students that they are a part of a community and that it’s their role to help out in whatever way they can.”

Majoring in environmental studies with a concentration of sustainable agriculture, Dylan Watters found his niche through Warren Wilson’s triad of work, service and academics. All three are grounded for him in sustainable agriculture, a scholastic direction he discovered through his experience in the college garden. “I learn so much through my own personal research in the gardens that I’m always questioning what is the state of agriculture. I have to push that envelope.”

Chosen from thousands of submissions on the topic of the ethics of eating meat, environmental studies professor Jay Bost’s essay, “Give Thanks for Meat,” won the New York Times Magazine essay contest.

Sacred Acts: How Churches are Working to Protect Earth’s Climate, a book by outdoor leadership/environmental studies professor Mallory McDuff, has been published by New Society Publishers. The book includes a foreword written by Bill McKibben and contributions by Katharine Hayhoe.
