Using an entire team effort, the canoe/kayak team took home the team championship at the Southeastern Intercollegiate Championships last weekend on the Tuckasegee River. The Owls used a first place finish in the team relay on Sunday to clinch the victory.
Mae Berlow and Davis Jones started the first leg strong giving the Owls a 10 second lead at the first transition. Armin Weise and Miron Golfman extended the lead even further to 2:40 after completing a strong second leg. Cameron Thacker and Corrine Hertz finished the relay victory with each completing a leg in their respective kayaks to close out the win.
Also medaling for the Owls:
Corinne Hertz – Gold (Kayak)
Corinne Hertz/Jonah Winchester – Silver (Tandem Canoe)
Cameron Thacker – Gold (Kayak)
Cameron Thacker – Silver (Solo Canoe)
Miron Golfman – Gold (Solo Canoe)
Miron Golfman/Armin Weise – Gold (Tandem Canoe)
Also notable during the weekend’s event was the caring and generous spirit exhibited by the Owls. After the racers’ meeting, members of the team unanimously decided to share their fast kayaks and canoes with the other teams.
“This made me prouder of my team than all of the medals on Saturday,” said WWC coach John Griffith.
The Owls had another reason to celebrate this weekend, too, with Miron Golfman winning the bronze medal in the down river/slalom combined class at the Open Canoe Nationals. Miron competed against many of the best paddlers in the country to win bronze. He finished behind WWC alum Eli Helbert.
