R. Dwayne Betts, MFA student, wins NAACP literary award

Betts, currently the Holden Scholar in Warren Wilson’s MFA program, won the NAACP award for his memoir, A Question of Freedom. The book recounts his journey from being sentenced to nine years in prison for carjacking at age 16 to developing a love for literature in his personal quest for identity. His next book, a collection of poetry titled “Shalid Reads His Own Palm,” will be released in May.

The NAACP Image Awards celebrate “outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts… as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors.” This year’s awards show was nationally televised on Feb. 26.
