Alma Shippy Memorial Scholarship established at Warren Wilson

Give A Hoot Climate Action Plan is official

Let’s celebrate the launch of Warren Wilson’s Climate Action Plan. It’s officially recorded with the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment. WWC is among the first wave of colleges and universities to submit a Climate Action Plan.

Jewish High Holidays on-campus and in Asheville

Interim Deanship of Service-Learning

As previously announced, Franklin Tate recently resigned from his position as Interim Dean of Service-Learning as of September 18 to direct a new youth education program for Trout Unlimited. Today I’m writing to inform you that Debra Kiliru will become Interim Dean of Service-Learning as of September 21. Please join me in congratulating Debra.

Franklin Tate

August 31st, 2009

I am writing to inform you that Franklin Tate has resigned as Interim Dean of Service-Learning, effective September 18, 2009, to take a newly created directorship with Trout Unlimited. Although I deeply regret that we’re losing this dedicated and extraordinarily competent member of our community, I know that Franklin is excited about pursuing this new chapter in his career with an organization of great importance.

Green honors

In the past two weeks, Treehugger.com and The Dailygreen.com each named WWC the #2 Greenest College in the nation, and Greenliving.families.com placed WWC in the top five of the nation’s greenest colleges. Sierra placed WWC in the top 20, and though our Sierra ranking dropped from 4 to 18, our overall sustainability score increased.

To all of you—those who’ve been here for the summer and those who are returning from home, summer work or travel—I extend my warmest welcome to a new academic year. This year finds the College in great shape with a terrific first-year class, a balanced budget, a solid endowment, and a national reputation as strong as, or stronger than, it has ever been in the history of the College. We have much for which to be thankful.

2009 Convocation Address

My 2007 installation and convocation speeches included references to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Henry James. Then in last year’s Convocation address I raised the bar by beginning with a reference to the writing of our own John Bowers in the Owl and Spade. Little did I know the year ahead would give John and me stories to share about our accidents and neurosurgeries. I’d like to start today’s event by officially welcoming JB back among us. His editorial eye and sense of humor will be needed this year on many tasks, not least is the Strategic Plan about which I’ll speak in a minute.

July has been a busy month on campus. We hosted a record-size summer Open House for prospective students, the Swannanoa Gathering has its highest enrollment ever, the Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival had a successful season, our MFA writing program graduated another fine class of writers, and the College continues to attract national praise. We’re in great shape going into the new academic year.
