WWC professors receive grants from Appalachian College Association

Two Warren Wilson College faculty members, Sally Fischer in Philosophy and Dongping Han in History

and Political Science, have received faculty development grants from the Appalachian College Association. The grants are

awarded in partial support of the professors sabbatical projects during the upcoming academic year.

Fischer will use her sabbatical to complete research toward and to begin writing a book

on an existentialist ethics from the writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Gabriel Marcel, and Luce Irigaray.

Han plans to study rural China. His hypothesis is that Chinese government faces legitimacy

crisises in the rural areas today. He will interview farmers and rural officials to test the hypothesis.

He will be on sabbatical for one year.

The Appalachian College Association, based in Berea, Ky., is a consortium of 35

independent liberal arts colleges and universities in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and

West Virginia. Currently these institutions collectively enroll more than 38,000 students. The Association provides

expanded and enhanced learning opportunities to faculty and students for the purpose of serving the educational and

economic well being of the people and communities of central Appalachia.
