Fischer will use her sabbatical to complete research toward and to begin writing a book on an existentialist ethics from the writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Gabriel Marcel, and Luce Irigaray. Han plans to study rural China. His hypothesis is that Chinese government faces legitimacy crisises in the rural areas today. He will interview farmers and rural officials to test the hypothesis. He will be on sabbatical for one year. The Appalachian College Association, based in Berea, Ky., is a consortium of 35 independent liberal arts colleges and universities in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
